Two young riders sit side by side on their horses, turned away from the viewer, sharing a pause that speaks of friendship, confidence, and growing independence. Their posture is relaxed, yet full of presence—grounded in a way that feels learned, not taught.
This image was especially personal to me, as it brought to mind my daughter Taylor and her friends at the kids rodeo—those early days filled with dust, laughter, and the beginnings of responsibility. There’s something timeless about watching young riders find their place in that world, where connection to animals, land, and each other becomes second nature.
I kept the composition open and the details soft, allowing the feeling of the moment to lead. The horizon stretches ahead of them, suggesting not just the physical landscape, but the path forward. This painting is about youth, friendship, and the quiet confidence that comes from growing up in the Western way of life."

This piece was inspired by the quiet, unseen moments in nature where connection speaks louder than movement. I was drawn to the tenderness between a doe and her fawn—the instinctive, protective bond and the sense of safety found in closeness. Rather than placing them in a detailed landscape, I chose to let the figures emerge softly from the page, allowing the emotion to take center stage.
Using loose watercolor washes and minimal edges, I wanted the forms to feel natural and unforced, much like the fleeting encounters we experience in the wild. The softness of the medium mirrors the gentleness of the subject, while the darker, more defined features around the eyes and noses anchor their presence and connection.
At its heart, this painting is about trust, nurture, and the quiet strength of motherhood—a reminder of the simple, profound relationships that exist all around us.

Artist Note
This piece is a quiet study of aspen trees—simple in form, yet rich with presence. I was drawn to the vertical rhythm of their trunks, each one distinct but connected, standing together in a kind of silent community. The high contrast of light bark against dark markings allowed me to focus on pattern, texture, and repetition rather than detail.
I chose to simplify the composition, letting the trees become almost abstract. By reducing the palette and softening the edges, the work becomes less about a specific place and more about a feeling—stillness, balance, and the subtle movement of light through a grove.
Aspens have always felt symbolic to me—resilient, interconnected, and quietly alive beneath the surface. This piece is a reflection of that quiet strength and the beauty found in simplicity.
